Thais generally use the term “Bangkok” only when they are speaking with foreigners. “Krung Thep” is the abbreviated name of a city that was founded in 1782 where modern Bangkok is situated. The monarch at that time, King Rama I, had decided to build his capital at the village of Bangkok, but soon changed his mind and opted for Krung Thep.
