Getting second ED visa, need to cancel old one?

Hi,
Im just about done studying Thai for a year in Hua Hin with an ED visa, and Im heading to Vientiane next week to hopefully get a new one for a second year. Ill be heading over the border three days before my last extension expires.
The school is preparing the paperwork for the new visa, but it just hit me that they havent mentioned anything about cancelling the old ED visa, which I know has been a requirement at the Nong Khai border before.
Is that still a thing? Will I have to cancel the old visa at my local immigration office before I go to Laos to get a new one?
