2 nights in Bangkok then I want to travel to an island by local transport but not fly. Maybe train the boat.

Koh samet or koh chang. Get a minivan. Coach or Taxi from Bangkok. Theres other islands alot further down south but it will take a day to get there on a bus.
2 nights in BKK probs not enough. Id say 3 min.. then jump on a bus/coach 2 where ever u fancy.. u can book when there. Just did the over nighter to samui from bkk and it was a breeze 10 hours inc a ferry.. £35 1 way
closest is Koh lan , sad that you cant fly down to any of the islands though . unless you there for a few months theb train is doable . try Samui way . but a lot of days lost travel .maybe over night train?
Koh Chang or Koh Samet are only a few hours from Bangkok by bus
Koh chang is only 4 hours and a short ferry ride from Bangkok and is lovely. I can’t wait to go back
