Full time traveling family from the USA, we have T-mobile, all is covered for free with our plan. No extra cost. Not sure what country you are coming from or cell plan you have. We were just in Bangkok with no issues
Think it all depends where you are from UK providers charge between £2 and £3 per day, some charge between £4 and £6, so its either a physical sim or an esim by scanning the QR code that way you wont have to physically remove your current sim as its app based
A sim is very very cheap in Thailand.

You will have to buy SIM in Thailand and SIM are available at airport also you can go to Seven eleven store in airport to buy sim
Most Thai airports have phone SIM shops. As you walk out of arrivals in BKK on the left you’ll find AIS.
AIS is comfortably the best and most popular in Thailand.
I’ve been using them for over 10 years its good because it works everywhere including far North East Thailand without being bombarded with promotional text messages.
They have many packages depending on your stay and will set your phone up.
Have Mapping everywhere, Internet and Social media everywhere.
Remember to take a sim pin so you can put your home sim back when leaving.
