You can go by bus , train and airplane, in my opinion you can search cheap flight Thai local domestic flight. 30 usd possible for it and quite nearly price by bus . , and save time .

The Northern bus terminal. Get a VIP bus make sure the bus has no more than 26 seats. It’s a comfortable sleep and you wake up in Chiang Mai. Also no hotel expense for that night
