If you have a UK licence, you can get an International Driving Permit from the Post Office, which is what you need to drive in Thailand (Y)
Get the idl from UK first…if on holiday
As a tourist ? Yes if course, but get an IDP from a main Post Office before you leave home. It’s only £5:50 and covers your arse .
legally you need a local license (actually very easy to get if you are coming for an extended stay) or a license from another country together with an international driving permit, as well as insurance obviously. the police checkpoints are nothing to worry about as the fine for not having a license is next to nothing but you will be uninsured / liable for damages (and legal action) in case of an accident (which are a common occurrence in thailand).
I don’t know where you’re traveling too but Pattaya only accept a Thai or international licence, there is a sign in the police station with a big cross through the uk licence, I’ve been stopped many times with IDP and never have a problem, it’s £5 from the uk post office .
