I’ve read before that the limit is £6k or equivalent in foreign currency but this site says it is $20K or equivalent

You can bring infar larger amounts no problem. Just declare it through the correct channel and of course the reason for it, and no problem. Over the years I have never encountered any problems but of course I have declared it properly and provided them with the reason and access to supporting information . Never has the reason been followed up by the authorities.
