This day officially marks the start of the rainy season, when monks retreat to their monasteries and temples.
Buddha did this in part to keep from killing insects and newly planted seeds. It is also a time for meditation, teaching and study for new monks as they enter into the monastic life, these are key elements for reaching enlightenment.
To observe Buddhist Lent, Buddhists usually perform merit making, giving alms to monks, attending sermons and participating in candlelight processions, They also strictly observe Buddhist ethics, especially on holy days.
Buddhist Lent lasts for the period of three lunar months. The end of Buddhist Lent also marks the end of the rainy season.
